Turn a necklace into a ring?

Ok, I bought my mother a beautiful garnet and diamond necklace for christmas. Only to find out why I never done that before was because all the elegant necklaces had chains that were way too dainty, so the last time (3 yrs ago) that i bought her a necklace we returned it and got earrings instead.
This year I made the same mistake forgetting about that ordeal until we were talking one night. Its too late to return or exchange the necklace as I bought it in the summer. I paid $235 for this necklace, I don’t have anyone close to me that would appreciate this kind of gift. My questions is how can I turn this into a ring without actually not having a ring to set the stones into? About how much would this cost me to do?

A) Some of your better jewelery stores will let you exchange something after this long, especially if you try to do it before Christmas.

B) Contact a jeweller or two who are known (i.e. say in their ad) that they do custom work. They will probably have – and if not can make – a setting suitable for your stone. Depending on what your chain is made of, they may also be willing to give you credit towards the ring for the value of the metal in the original setting.

C) Change to a chain that’s not ‘too dainty.’ This might be something sold as a man’s item. If the stone as it is won’t go onto a heavier chain, just see a jeweller about adding or changing the bail (the loopy bit at the top a chain usually goes through) to one that will go on the different chain, or have them put it on for you (perhaps by removing the clasp, putting the pendant on the chain, and the putting the clasp back on the chain).

If you go for a ring, your cost will depend mostly on how much metal is in the setting, so without knowing the setting, it’s hard to guess.
