Does anyone know this old film?

It is an old costume/period type drama set in the 18th century or thereabouts. May be black and white. Was probably made in the 1930′s or 40′s. The leading lady might be Margaret Lockwood or someone like this. She ends up falling in love with a highwayman after he stops her carriage and steals her jewellery. But then she starts going out at night being a highwayman/woman herself. I think she ends up getting shot.

IMDb synopsis:
In 17th century England, naive, pure Caroline invites her cousin and best friend Barbara Worth of London to visit with her a couple of days before her wedding to her beloved bridegroom, wealthy magistrate Sir Ralph Skelton. The selfish, evil Barbara uses her beauty to seduce the weak Ralph, who falls in love with her. Caroline calls off the wedding, and Barbara marries Ralph. When Barbara, while gambling, loses a jewel inherited from her mother, she pretends to be famous highway thief Captain Jerry Jackson, recovers her jewels. The experience is so exhilarating that she begins a career of crime, robbing travelers. When she meets the real Jerry Jackson on the road, she becomes his lover and a killer. Meanwhile, Ralph realizes that he loves Caroline, but it seems to be too late for their life together.

Magdalen King-Hall’s novel was filmed again in 1983. Starring Faye Dunaway, Alan Bates, Oliver Tobias, Denholm Elliott and John Gielgud, it is much racier, as that time period was, earning it an R rating.
